Winchester’s first self-ejecting single-shot rifle, marketed towards youth for target shooting, not to be confused with the center-fired lever-action rifle that shares the same model name. Produced between 1958 and 1961, it is a unique gun in that it is a semi-auto operating system with no magazine. Therefore, unlike other semi-autos, while it is self-ejecting, it is not self-loading. Each round is manually inserted through the top loading chute (which also engages the thumb-operated safety). Cases are ejected through the downward port. Many Baby-Boomers and some Gen-Xers might have some fond memories of these rifles, but they have become increasingly hard to find in gun shops and at shows.
These interesting rim-fire rifles often sell for $275 to $300 dollars, making this a real bargain. The walnut stock is in good shape and the wood grain shows nice character. The receiver and barrel are also in very respectable shape. The barrel has some wear near the crown but the rifling is still solid. This is a nice collector piece, nostalgia gun or still very suitable for it’s original intended purpose, a youth shooter. Manufactured prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act, this rifle was never serialized so the exact year of manufacture is uncertain.
