Identical to German Mauser 98s in all respects but one; Turkish M1938s use small ring barrels. This feature makes these rifles the strongest of all Mauser variants. As with all Mauser 98 actions, the K. Kale produced Mauser has a bolt featuring dual locking lugs and a third “safety” lug just forward of the bolt handle, a large claw extractor with strong ejector, a thumb cutout in the left wall of the receiver, a 3-position, wing-type safety and it is stripper-clip compatible. The cleaning rod is mounted below the barrel and above the bayonet lug.
This example seems to have had an interesting history. The receiver was originally of German manufacture; the faded “WAFFENFABRIK” and “MAUSER” can still be seen under the Turkish stamping. It appears that this rifle was manufactured at the Turkish military factory (Kirikkale Tufek Fabrikast) in Ankara in 1941 and then modified or refurbished in 1947. Overall it is in very nice condition, especially for a WW2 surplus rifle. The action works smoothly and it definitely has the feel of a robust, quality-made rifle. The Circassian walnut furniture has a nice grain and shows no cracking or warping. The bolt and breach are clean. The barrel shows some pitting near the crown but the rifling still looks good.
Includes a silicon-treated gun sock (not pictured).
